Metallic Coatings

Optiforms manufactures many different thin film coatings. The coatings represented in these charts are just a small sample of the coatings that we can apply. Our optical thin film coatings can be specified based on performance at a specific wavelength and the performance of an optical thin film coating can be affected by the geometry of the part to be coated. Coating performance can be affected by the angle of incidence and the specific angle at which the coating is tested.

Gold

Totally inert, gold is an excellent reflective surface for the near to far infrared spectrum. OFI gold is available as electrodeposited or vacuum deposited based on application and or substrate material. Reflectivity scans are available upon request and are typically performed on flat coupons coated in the same lot as the actual substrate.

Protected Aluminum

Silicon dioxide overcoated aluminum, exhibits over 90% reflectance across the visible spectrum, with good handling characteristics. While not as durable as rhodium, it has improved reflectance with slightly increased cost.

Aluminum

Aluminum is a vacuum deposited soft metal with approximately 90% reflectance from the ultraviolet through the infrared, with the exception of 800 to 850 nanometers. Cost is moderate, but the nature of bare aluminum is so delicate that it is rarely used without protective overcoats.

Enhanced Aluminum

Enhanced aluminum has higher reflectivity than standard aluminum at visible wavelengths. This coating consists of a base layer of vacuum deposited aluminum with a performance enhancing dielectric stack.

Rhodium

Hard, durable, and inert, this precious metal is electro-deposited. Reflectivity ranges from near 70% in the near ultraviolet to over 80% in the infrared. With this broad range and the relative low cost, electrodeposited rhodium has become the standard at Optiforms.

Silver

Silver is used for demanding broad-band reflectance applications including instrument mirrors. It has the best reflectivity for visible and IR applications. Because of its poor durability it is not an option for some applications.

AQ HR

This coating contains a high reflector dielectric stack on aluminum to reflect the visible spectrum and reflect heat (infrared) at 45 degrees. The average reflectance is more than 98% from 425 to 650nm with>90%R at higher wavelengths. Custom angles of incidence can be designed to specification. This coating is not available on all products.
